Over 420 participants from 43 countries to attend ESIL Conference in Riga

On 8 September from 9:00 – 13:00 at the National Library of Latvia the mass media are cordially invited to attend the opening events of the 12th Annual Conference of the European Society of International Law (ESIL) (address: 3 Mūkusalas Street, Riga).

Opening speeches at 9:00 – 9:30 will be given by RGSL Rector, Professor George Ulrich, Latvian Constitutional Court President Aldis Laviņš, ESIL President André Nollkaemper, Saeima Deputy Speaker Inese Lībiņa-Egnere and the State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Raivis Kronbergs.

From 9:30-11:00 the opening discussion “How International Law Works in Times of Crisis” will take place. The participants are: Anne van Aaken (University of St. Gallen), Judge James Crawford (International Court of Justice), Lauri Mälksoo (University of Tartu), Catherine Redgwell (University of Oxford).

From 11:30 journalist Pauls Raudseps (Weekly "IR") will discuss the theme “The Relevance of International Law in Crisis Situations” with Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs

The Conference is hosted by RGSL in cooperation with the Latvian Constitutional Court, the Latvian Ministry of Justice and the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Conference is supported by the University of Latvia and the European Commission. Over 400 participants from 43 countries are expected to attend the Conference, whose theme is: "How International Law Works in Times of Crisis”.
