ESIL Conference Day 2: discussions on terrorism, the refugee crisis, cybercrime

 
Friday, 9 September, was the second day of the 12th Annual Conference of the European Society of International Law (ESIL). Conference participants discussed significant themes of international law that are currently globally topical and open to innovative solutions.
 
Conference participants discussed the role of international court institutions, the refugee and asylum seeker crisis, international law in the Baltic States, cybersecurity and its reconcilability with personal privacy rights, the significance of international law and future prospects, gender equality, global and European governance challenges under pressure, the role of international law in crisis situations, and terrorism.
 
The second day of the Conference also saw the ESIL Book Prize 2016 awarded to the author of the best legal literature published in the last year. The winner was Arnulf Becker Lorca for a review of aspects of international law in intellectual property issues in the period 1842 - 1933 (Mestizo International Law: A Global Intellectual History 1842-1933, published in January 2015 by Cambridge University Press).
 
The ESIL Conference ends on Saturday, 10 September, with a public discussion between Vice President Jean-Marc Sauvé of the French Council of State and Latvian Constitutional Court judge and RGSL Professor Ineta Ziemele followed by the ceremonial closing speech by ESIL President André Nollkaemper. The closing event of the ESIL Conference will be broadcast live from the Latvian National Library, Ziedonis Hall from 09:00 until 13:00 at www.esil.rgsl.lv/en/live.
 
The ESIL Conference is hosted by Riga Graduate School of Law and the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Latvia in cooperation with the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Latvian Ministry of Justice and the European Commission. The Conference has gathered over 420 participants from 43 countries. The theme of this year’s Conference is “How International Law Works in Times of Crisis”.
